It’s been a good while since I last visited Bohernabreena in 2019 and much has changed since then. The best addition to the area was the opening of Bohernabreena Upper Lake car park which was a fantastic addition to the start of the trail which previously had a small amount of parking and no amenities. The car park can be found along a few quiet country roads at the top of the Bohernabreena Lake right where the Google Map pin points.
The owners of the car park have provided ample parking, toilet facilities and a coffee van on weekends which offers some truly welcome hot beverages, especially in the coldest time of year! There is a €5 cover charge when you enter the car park which can be paid via Revolut, cash or credit card at the coffee van. An honesty cash box or card option is also available if the van is closed. The owners are very friendly and helpful providing information about the walk.
You can find the start of the trail on the left after leaving the car park and following the road for a short walk till the entrance of Bohernabreena. There is a 8.5km loop along the reservoirs along a scenic trail. Just to note that the trail can get very muddy after rain so bring along the wellies or hiking boots you don’t mind getting muddy.
