It seems whenever I have a visitor to Ireland they come with realistic weather expectations, armed with umbrellas and raincoats. On the day my visitor to Ireland arrived, the weather was glorious and showing off it’s beautiful blue skies. I searched the map for something I hadn’t seen before that was outside of Dublin and found Ardgillian Castle which looked like a great place to walk, considering the great weather.
The castle was built in 1738, and was extended in the late 1800’s with the west and east wings that were added. The area around the castle was originally very wooded and was cleared out but a sections of the woodland were preserved. At the castle visitors can enjoy snacks and beverages at the café. There is also a Victorian Conservatory was added to the Rose Garden in the mid 1990’s which housed a variety of interesting plants. There is also walled garden and herb garden that can be enjoyed.
From the trails around the demesne there is a pedestrian footbridge that crosses over the railway to the beach. The name of the stairs – “The Lady’s stairs” allegedly gets its name from from a ghostly figure of a lady seen occasionally at the stairs. The beach is beautiful and pristine with a long stretch of sand to walk along.
Overall, a great location to visit, especially on a beautiful day.
