One of my favourite things about staying in Gunnison was all of the trails along the Gunnison River, and the peace and quiet of the area. Not a massive tourist area compared with other areas in the Rocky Mountains, it has the perfect amount of places to see without the crowds. At the time I visited the area in October, the trees were filled with the vibrant colours of autumn leaves. The trail I chose was Neversink Trail which was an easy 1.5 mile roundtrip.
There are 7 other trails along the river which range in distance and fitness abilities from 1.5 mile up to 6 mile routes.
The second hike I did that day was at Hartman Rocks which was nearby. Besides for the hiking activities, Hartman Rocks was very busy with mountain bikers and not surprisingly so: it had a range of trails from easy slopes to adrenaline rush inducing drops.
Besides getting outdoors and hiking, I stopped at a store in Gunnison known as: “One of the most unique stores in the Rocky Mountain West” – Traders Rendezvous. Besides the taxidermied animals, antlers, and furs that were for sale, it had interesting handmade gifts and souvenirs available. It was a strange store, but interesting and certainly unique.
The rest of my time I spent in Gunnison was mostly back at my accommodation: The Inn at Tomichi Village. It had a fantastic indoor pool and hot tub. Perfect for the 28.4°F evenings.
