The lakes in Blessington have been around for about 50 years since the building of the Poulaphouca Dam / hydroelectric station. This reservoir is the largest man-made lake in Ireland.
The Liffey river which runs through Dublin’s city centre has a source around the Liffey lakes: in the Kuppure Mountain nearby flowing from the bogs.
There is a walking/mountain biking greenway available which circles around the lakes. It offers easy terrain to cycle or walk on. After the rain, it might get a bit muddy though. It’s about a 6.5km distance greenway.
Along the Greenway, there are beautiful views of the lakes and the surrounding hills. Bird life is abundant in the trees.
There is a car park available at the beginning of the Greenway.
