Colorado Springs: Colorado to Albuquerque: New Mexico – Point of Interest: Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

After sleeping the night in Colorado Springs it was time to drive from Colorado to New Mexico, stopping in Albuquerque for the next leg of the journey. It was a 6 hour drive – 363 miles along what seemed like the scenic route judging from Google Maps where there were a few places to stop along the way. The most direct route was 5.5 hours, but didn’t seem to feature much along the way to see.

The most interesting stop I found was the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. It is an impressive steel bridge which rises 650 feet above the Rio Grande Gorge, making it the 2nd highest bridge along America’s Highway System. It is also the 5th highest bridge in America.

While I was there I found a market with Native American crafts and souvenirs which had a great selection of leather-goods, jewellery, stones and other crafts. Visitors to the attraction can also walk along the bridge to view the impressive scenery of the gorge and do a walk along the rim of the gorge from the parking lot.

For a long drive it was a welcome break to stretch my legs.

I also met the good people at the Suicide Awareness and Spirit House Bus who bring awareness of those struggling with mental health, and are available to share love, support and prayers to those who are struggling. The man I spoke to was genuinely caring and compassionate – the world can do with more people like him.
