Garden of the Gods – Colorado Springs

Free to the public, the beautiful Garden of the Gods park is a National Natural Landmark that is one of the most popular attractions in Colorado Springs, and for good reason. It holds interest for nature lovers who wish to experience the fauna, flora and geology of the area. It was even once home to one of the rarest dinosaurs in the world which was discovered in the park: the Theiophytalia Kerri. It was also home to the Bison (“American Buffalo”).

To explore the park there are a range of activities that can be enjoyed: hiking, scenic drives, places to picnic and mountain bike. There are a range of trails available regardless of fitness level there is something for everyone. You can find trails which range from a short walk of a ¼ mile and longer trails up to 5 miles. The park is also handicap accessible. Other activities include horseback riding and rock climbing which can be organised in advance. If you are going for a hike, be sure to bring enough water along, comfortable walking shoes and sunblock, and warm layers for winter. Note that they strictly ask you to stick to the marked trails.

Visitors can discover more information at the visitors centre, taking in the dramatic views of the sandstone formations of the park with Pikes Peak it the background and view the famous kissing camels. There is lots of information about the plants, animals, geology and people of the area. You can also stop at the café for a meal and browse through the selection of souvenirs.

For me, the best part about the visit to Garden of the Gods was being able to learn about the diverse fauna and flora of the area, take a walk along one of their trails and enjoy the dramatic red rock landscape.

Even though the park is free, just to note when you arrive if it is in the busiest part of the day you might struggle to find parking at the visitors centre and might need to be patient for a parking to become available.

I’ve added in a photo of where the kissing camels are, I only found them after my visit upon writing this article!
