A Breath of Fresh Air: Exploring Luukki’s Trails

One of the things I loved in Finland was all the beautiful nature reserves and forests. Walking along the Luukki trails was a perfect example of a recreational area offering peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.

At the popular outdoor recreation area, Luukki, I started my walk along one of the marked trails which covered a 6km loop. Along the way I saw beautiful forests, cliffs with scenic views of the lake and walked through a section which was full of ferns. I saw a few people walking their dogs on leads, and people foraging for mushrooms. The forest was rich in a variety of mushrooms, and I saw one couple walking past had a full bag of mushrooms. Below I have a photo of two of the interesting mushrooms I saw. The trail was well marked and easy to navigate without getting lost.

During the walk I saw signs with skiing symbols and found that traditional skiing is a popular choice in winter. With the range between level and steep slopes I can understand that Luukki would be a good choice for outdoor recreation.

At the end of my walk I reached the courtyard of the old manor which had a shop and café which was unfortunately closed at the time, but had washroom facilities which were open.

There is another trail that covers a 9km distance along which you can see the shore of seven ponds, cooking shelters and beaches. There are a few facilities along both trails which offer parking spots, cooking shelters and fireplaces and swimming areas. After acquiring a permit you can enjoy the recreational fishing in the lakes and ponds which offer rainbow trout and other wild fish species.
